MAORI GETS CHANCE.
BUT HAS NARROW ESCAPE.
PLACED ON PROBATION
In view of what Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., told him this morning, Pine Karakiakore (30), who appeared for sentence at the Police Court on two charges of theft from roadmen's whares, can consider himself a lucky native. "If 1 send you to gaol, you will probably stay there for all time, because you have already been declared an habitual criminal," Mr. Hunt said to Pine. "But, on the probation officer's recommendation, lam going to give you your last chance. \ou will be convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon and ordered to make restitution of £4 3/. You can thank Mi\ Campbell for your lucky escape." Karakiakore, who was yesterday described by Mr. Bryce Hart as* a "silent drinker,'' was also prohibited.
