ACTIVITY IN EDEN.

In harmony with the bright external dements, workers and voters in the new electorate of Eden went about the busi-h-j-s of the election in cheerful mood. Juring the forenoon a fairly large number of residents, mostly women, visited lie various booths, and between noone •nid 2 p.m. the deputy-returning officers had a still busier time.

The largest number of votes were cast •it the Centenary Hall, Dominion Road, while other active centres were the Presbyterian Church Hall, Mount Men Road, the Epsom Public Library, the Gordon Road Methodist Hall, the View Road Congregational Hall, and the Kingsland Jubilee Hall.

An early round of the polling booths was made by, the returning officer (Mr. 11. ,T. Copping), who found that his :?<> deputies had their work well in hand. As the day wore on and the staffs liecame more used to tlieir work the proceedings were carried out with even greater facility.

In tlie Eden electorate there was considerable activity among supporters of the various parties and of licensing and prohibition interests. Motor cars with campaign colours were nlvinsy continuously. and no party ran the risk of allow" ing its tokens to be overshadowed by those of opposing factions. Officials who had most to do with the arrangements predicted that the final count would reveal a heavy poll in Eden.

"Information," that ever-ready sonrcc of news, is forbidden by regulation to give telephone subscribers results of the electoral and licensing polls, because of the necessity for keeping the automatic system normal in case of fires and accidents, with their consequential rush of urgent calls for brigade and medical services.
