SYDNEY, this day.

A miner, Joseph Bedford, was overcome by black damp while sinking a coal shaft near Wallsend, Newcastle. A man named Thomas, working nearby, was attracted by Bedford's ■ young brother's alarm. He went down the shaft despite the deadly fumes but was twice forced to come up owing to their effects. The third time he managed to get a rope round Bedford and hauled him to the surface dead.
