AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP.
A. BOWIE TAKES TITLE.
WHITE BEATEN IN FINAL.
Showing plenty of confidence and a good command over the balls, A. Bowie won the New Zealand amateur billiards championship last evening, defeating M. W. White by a margin of 173 in the final game of 1000 up. There was a large attendance of the public, and both players were heartily applauded at the conclusion of the match.
When the second session was begun, Wm. Bowie, who was in play with an unfinished break of 28, had a lead of 82. He added only 2 to his unfinished break, And both players then settled down to a steady game. Bowie had a run of good scoring and got a lead of 150, but White, playing determinedly, rallied well and reduced the margin to 9. A faulty stroke by White let his opponent in again, and Bowie pleased the spectators with a splendid break of 75. Thence to the end Bowie was the more confident, although White played a good uphill game. Breaks: Bowie, 75, 50, 40, 3G, 33, 31, 25, 25 aud 24; average, 10.8; White, 42, 38, 30, 20, 23, 22.
At the end of tho game Bowie was presented with a gold medal, and White with a cue and case. The winner, in returning thanks, paid a tribute'to the Auckland Sports Club's arrangements for the tournament, and made special mention of the efforts of the marker, N. Emmett. '
