CLEANING UP POLITICS.
MR. STAIAWORTKY'S APPEAL
SIR JOSEPH WARD AS LEADER.
**Aa I have gone up and down New Zealand during the past few months helping to persuade a worthy type of business men to stand for Parliament, I have frequently been told that politics is a dirty business," said Mr. A. J. Stallworthy, United party candidate for Eden, when speaking in the Gordon Road Methodist HaU last evening. "Well," he added, "if it continues to be, it the fault of the electors. The time has come when the United party is able to put forward candidates who will make politics clean and we ask you to return us to the Treasury benches." (Applause.)
The speaker commented on the entry into the electorate that night of the Prime Minister in support of Mr. Potter's candidature, and at some length ho quoted from Hansard to show that relationships had not in the past session been altogether amiable between Mr. Coates and some of his followers.
Mr. Stallworthy also quoted the recent remark of Mr. Lyenar to the effect that the Prime Minister would like to do more, but that his hands were tied. He asserted that the House of Representatives was a "tied House," «nd claimed that in the-interests of effective Government the time had come for a change in administration.
Reply to questions, Mr. Stallworthy said he saw no reason why he as a Protestant should not be associated with a party of which a Roman Catholic was the leader. He laid that his father had held the highest opinion of Sir Joseph Ward and he, too, had , tho fullest confidence in him. (Applause.)
In the event of Labour being placed on the Treasury benches —a probability which he scouted —the 'candidate said lie would vote to put Mr. Holland out of power. ** The candidate was given a good heading. He was heartily accorded a vote of thanks and confidence.
