TAURANGA NEWS.
The Tauranga County Council has been advised by Mr. H.- Watkinaon, District Engineer of Public Works, that Xo. 3 District Highways Council had recommended that a subsidy of £3 for £1 be provided by the Main Highways Board for metalling and improving the Tauranga-Te Puke section of the main highway so as to enable tbe County Council to raise a loan and put thi9 work in hand. The Highways Council could not see Its way to recommend tfee board to declare the Parpamoa-Waitao Stream Boad a highway. The chairman of the County Council, Mr. R. King, pointed out that a considerable portion of the Tauranga-Te Puke highway passed through native lands which did not contribute rates. Tlie native rates levied In the Te Puke Riding- last vrar amounted to £"»11 10/4, but onlv £fi \vas paid. The council agreed that the chairman and the Te Puke representatives be authorisedto take steps for raising a loan la tbe Te Puke Biding.
