FOUR DAYS' CARNIVAL

CONCLUDES.

LAUGHING PRINCE BEATS

RAPIER.

MEMBERS' HANDICAP TO RED

HECKLE.

RIDDIFORD SCORES A DOUBLE

(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.".) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The Canterbury Jockey Club's Metropolitan meeting ended to-day. The weather was overcast, with slight showers. The course was in good order and the attendance was fair. The totalisator handled £52,293, as compared with £54,024 10/ on the same day last year. The total for the four days was £194,079, as against £204,449 10/ last year. Surprise in Sprint. In the Members' Handicap Royal Saxon was smartest out, followed by Cimabue, Set Sail and Childsplay. At the end of a flirlong Banket ran to the front, followed by Royal Saxon, while a little further on Red Heckle was in third place, with Childsplay handy, Golden Armour being last, with Haze only a little in front of her. Banket showed the way round the home turn, but Red Heckle took charge on reaching the straight, with Royal Saxon, Arrow Lad, Set Sail and Cimabue prominent, just behind him. Cimabue and Arrow Lad soon retired. Benzora then came with a strong run. Red Heckle and Benzora fought out an interesting finish, Red Heckle winning by a head. Set Sail was two lengths away, half a length in front of Haze, who finished very fast over the last two furlongs, while Royal Saxon was fifth. Outsiders Prominent. In the Seymour Handicap Denier caused a lengthy delay at the start by bolting and galloping two miles the reverse way before he was pulled up. He was brought back to the paddock and took no part in the race. Panther was smartest out, followed by Ten, while Broadmoor was, soon in third place, with Smithereens and Camisader next. At the end of two furlongs Broadmoor was showing the way well clear to Smithereens, with Panther, Teri and Camisader still comprising the next bunch. Broadmoor , retired* when the straight was _ readied, Teri and Smithereens being just clear of Panther at the distance, but Panther wore them down, beating. Teri by a neck. SmithereeiMi was half a-length away, with Camisader two lengths further back, and Tembroney jjiext. The Classic. Laughing Prince and Goblin Market were smartest out in the 1 Stead Gold Cup, while Hoylake was slow to move. At the mile post Goblin Market.was just in front of Silver Paper, \§rith laughing Prince, Rapier and Hoylake following at lengthy intervals. They raced .without change till half a mile from home, where Goblin Market retired, while Rapier moved np to Silver Paper. These two led into the straight, but Laughing Prince soon ran past them, winning easily by a length and a-half from Rapier. Hoylake, finishing on strongly, was a length further back, with Silver Paper a similar distance away, fourth, and Goblin Market last.

The Three-year-olds. Mooregas was- the smartest out in the Stoneyhurst, and he led along the back from Consent and Concentrate, with Prickles in the rear. Calamine moved up after going two furlongs, and half a mile from home he was in front, with Mooregas next and Prickles improving her position. Calamine led into the straight, with Prickles, Concentrate and Mooregas at the head> of the others. Prickles met with interference, and dropped back, while Roi Do Val and Babbi moved up on the outside. Calamine was beaten a furlong from the post, and in a good finish Concentrate beat Mooregas by a head. Roi De Val was a length away, a neck in front of Babbi. Mandane Beaten Again. The Fendalton Handicap, with which the meeting terminated, attracted the nine acceptors. Mandane was a pronounced favourite, with First Sight, Mendip and Sir Roy disputing second position, and Pink Note also heavily backed. Pink Note led Mandane for the start, while after two furlongs Vaward and Rotor joined in. There was no change to the home turn, where Sir Roy and Mendip started to move up from the back. Pink Note and Vaward retired at the entrance to the straight. First Sight then made his appearance, and, taking charge at the distance, he won easily by a length and a-half. In a great finish for the places Mandane beat Rotor by a neck, with Mendip and Sir Roy only heads away. Better placed early Sir Roy would- have been hard to beat. First Sight .won impressively.
