CANOE TTPSET AT MERCER, 1 '"'ROUGH: WATER OT WAIKATO. ■ (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") : • ; ' 'MERCER, this day. ' ~ A Maori -najned Jack Hape, single, aged 23, a" workman employed on the road,'was drowned this afternoon in the • Waikato River. He was crossing in a canoe with a native companion known :„-a* "Whistle/' The water was very rough owing to the wind blowing against '•'.. the current, and the two men got into difficulties, with the result that the canoe capsized. "Whistle" managed to swim ashore, but Hape ' became; ex- ■ hausted, and, after throwing up his hands, sank, to" be seen no more.-.-The river was too rough- this afternoon to'permit of dragging operations.
