MGUKES; •'_..; Wellington still continues to have a slight lead over Auckland in the-mat-ter of shipping; 1 according to'the Government monthly publication, of Statistics.", The total manfest tonnage, for the nine months ended September 30 last was 1,678,132 at Wei-' lington", and 1,525,088 at Auckland: Next on the list come Lyttelton, with 535,531, tons, and'Otago, with .303,476 tons. . Westport, with 502,198 tons, and Greyiuouth; with 243,857- tons, reprer. sent almost exclusively .coal exports; and not general cargo, as in the case of the-other ports; and so. cannot be taken, into consideration; when comparing the main ports. .There are, seven ports that handled over 100J00O".tons, and. among •them Whangarei is well up with 128,574 tons, of which; however, close on 85,000 tons' were cement. Auckland still continues to' have the largest' amount of coastwise traffic, the .number of coastal vessels that arrived during the month of September, for, instance, being 518, and the next nearest to that was Wellington, 1 .with*-202,:, followed by # Lyttclt'bn/jyiti 103."-\- These three .ports were the. only ones' to get'- into three figures.,
