The visitors batted first, and when stumps were drawn, had made 372 runs for three wickets,.of which D. R. Jardine, the' Surrey amateur, made 140. ,••„.._ ■ The weather was warm at first, but colder later on,- and the wicket was good. There were 20,000 spectators, and the gate, receipts were £1800. ■. The teams as chosen, were:—England: Chapman, Jardine, .Sutcliffe, Hendren, Tate, Tyldesley, Freeman, Hammond, Larwood, Ames. and. Leyland. New South Wales: Kippax (captain), Oldfield, Bradman, Jackson, Hooker,. Morgan, Gregory, Andrews, Kelleway, Nicholls' and Campbell. if'-" r Jardine and Sutcliffe made a fine opening partnership. Jardine was particularly brilliant in onsido play, turning the fastest deliveries, of Gregory and Nicholls to leg. •" ..'-.-' ' ' Jardine was a far more attractive opening batsman than Hobbs. He scored 140 in 220 minutes, including sixteen fours. This Was his third century of the tour. • Sutcliffe was very sound, his offdriving being very good. 'He gave a possible chance to Hooker at second slip off Nicholls, the fieldsman just touching the ball. Otherwise his was a brilliant display. ■ .'■/•' Hammond and -Hendren were.brilliant. Each hatsman hit a six off Campbell. Hammond's score included! eleven fours. He was very strong' on . offside play, showing a magnificent shot through the covers. '■ ■,'•■- The bowling ; .was ; accurate. Kelleway swung the ball well, and took two wickets for 75 runs. .Hooker broke sharply from the off occasionally. The wicket was a batsman's paradise.
