NOTES- FROM WAIKATO.
TE RAPA AND TE AWAMUTTJ. BUSY TIME ON TRAINING TRACKS. The tracks at Te Eapa and Te Awamutuj are in tip-top order just now. With a week of ideal weather, trainers have had everything in their , favour, and the various galloping candidates at those leading centres have had the opportunity to make good progress. .With the Te Kuiti and Takapuna meetings close at hand, the time is a busy one for all stables. ''.'"*: Ruling Chief, whose name - appears among the candidates listed: foiv.two-year-old,racing at Takapuna, is a! riuuir.. jber of JJ F. Tutchen's team. The Chief 'Ruler—-Btiynette representative has .been working;for some time at Te Rapa, ibut he gives the impression that he will riot. eom%-to hand until late'-in, the. j-ac-. ing'tefm.' •■.-'•"."'■ _•'•;'•"..•..'-■ : Paganelli is being got ready'by.' his trainer' (M. .J.. Carroll) at Te Eapa to contest the. Eeilding Stakes at the end of the month: , When he returned home after his racing at the Auckland spring meeting, .-thef'jspn of Lord Quex and Ringdove- looked a greatly improved horse.'.' The work he has got through 'in. the interval has still, further advanced his'-condition for racing- As he wUlfbe in great nick, with .another couple of weeks' work-into "him. Pag'arielli will keep the best of the'iii moving in the fiye-furlong race at Feilding. Luminary; who was recently taken over -by' Albert Jackson, is doing nicely in his work at Te Eapa. The Day Comet—-Thurnline chestnut was given a schooling education over hurdles a few mornings ago, when he shaped quite satisfactorily for a beginner at the game. The chestnut is a good stamp for the batten business.
A Hurdling Preparation. A very patient policy is being pursued with Berinthia, who entered, upon her public career as a hurdler on'the opening day of the Waikato Club's spring meeting. The Mountain Knight mare, who was one of the forward, runnei'3 for quite a long, way in the" niile and a-half journey of the 'occasion to, jumped very nicely.- requires to improve her staying qualities to turn out profitable in the new department, and the prospects in this respect are being viewed In a favourable light by those who Bhould understand the .needs. TK'e juniper Ashloigh is working along steadily under J. F. Tutchen's super-
vision.at. Te Rapa. . iThjV big„~raking: cliestnux by Archiestown is eventually to be put to stceplechasing, and the early indications he has given in this connection have been very hopeful. * Pouri,' who won the Wellington Steeplechase and was runner-up to Wiltshire in the main cross-country event at the Grand National meeting .in August, has been among the active ones with J. V. Tutchen"s team at Te Rapa: The Spalpeen gelding put on some flesh while having an easy time of it after his return from Riccarton. It will not be long before he is prepared for genuine business once again. Crimestor, the two-year-old by Polymestor, who was purchased in Australia, has got more racy-looking since the Waikato' meeting, where; he. had the opening' start of his career; It will probably round about the autumn before Crimestor is ready -to stretch out to somewhere near his best; but the breeding is there, f.nd it will only be a matter "of time with him. .", ■ <■
Famdon has probably been as long in work as any of the jumping brigade at Te Rapa. . The son of California' and Ballistite- is of the wiry brand, and has been infusing. plenty of dash into ■' the work he has been given on 7 the flat at |Te Rapa.- He.-will, 'rfiost,,likely,. : undergo |his next racing at the. Te -Kuiti..ClubV .meeting, at which' "he'is entered for the hurdles each day; "'.'.-' :
Will Make Amends. Stormy was a very unlucky horse in being beaten in the concluding event at the Dargaville- meeting. The son of Quin Abbey and Gipsy Martian is right back to his best form again and it should not' be, loiig . before he makes amends for the defeat recorded against him at his latest start. Tinopono, .a hurdler in R. Hannan's team at Cambridge, is being kept on the move in view of racing to bo undertaken over the battens at tho Te Kuiti Club's meeting. When he gets properly seasoned, Tinopono is likely to be having 'a say among the grade he will encounter round the country. Ramblin'. Kid bled during the race for tho Hunters!:. Hurdles- at= Cambridge on Labour Day. i The Winterbourne gelding had shown a slight, .tendency in this direction on occasions, prior to joining up..with R.-.Sy*ne's,'team at Te Rapa: It is nothing very severe, however, and Ramblin' Kid is likely to have his next race on tho flat at Te Kuiti. Bright Day has not "won a race for some tinie. The Day Comet —Lady Gwendoline chestnut had a couple of races oh the flat at • the ■ spring fixture at To Rapa, which had the-effect of
sharpening,, him ,up.. considerably'. . . He has • been getting a regular ' round of track duty in the intervals since then, but it is' very doubtful if he will again get back to the form he was capable of a few; seasons back. Bright Day has been tried out as a, hurdler, but he did not make a success in this department. Whitiora, a maiden by Some Boy 11. from a Gravitation marc, is, being trained at Te Rapa by F. Watson. Like most? of the stock of the Australian-bred sire, Whitiora is of "the compact type. He is a long way from being ready yet for racing, but he gives ' the impression of possessing plenty of determination.
The Lamb was above himself in condition when, lie was raced at the Dargaville meeting, when he, had, his opening essays, of the new season. The Lord Miiltifid gelding ran a couple of failraces ;in sprint company at Avondale and lie looks. all the better for the serious : : gallops he had .'at Avondale. Round about, the holiday meetings, The Lamb may, bo ready to give of his best. : Back ! to the Tracks."
New Moon has been working over, the past couple of weeks with J. F.' Tutclien's team on the Te Rapa tracks. The little 'Kilb.roney gelding has not displayed any ill effects of .the knock he sustained while in his box and -which kept him out of. his engagement at the Labour Day meeting at Cambridge.: 7 " Flying Juliet lias come to no harm by tho racing she has had to the present stage of the new season. She has had two successes since the new term opened and, in her present trim, the black daughter of Romeo---Feneila should keep tho opposition busy when' she is next saddled up, which' will'be at the Takapuna meeting at the end of the month. Always sustained a fall at Cambridge, but itappears.to have left no ill effects. The Day Comet—Nowena chestnut has been getting through his work in good stylo' 1 on.the tracks. He is a hard sort to place,Vbut.some of the holiday fixtures should afford him. the opportunity to contribute something, toward hispecep. Fraser is doing his work freely on the tracks, without recording anything out of the .way in the matter of time. It is the intention to race the two-year-old ■at Takapuna'. The{Raceful —Miss Roseland gelding will require some racing before .he is properly keyed up. Mervette, unlike the majority of the Lucullus stock, appears to race best on top of the. ground; This member of A. Tinker's team has not been idle on the tracks, and from this on an improvement, may be looked for when serious business is demanded.
! Te Ngeru,: a. daughter of Catmint/liad j not been" in work very long prior to dead-heating for first place and running second at her ' next .appearance, which was in the minor grade, at the Waikato Club's' spring meeting. This member of A. Cook's team .at Te Awamutu, is the makings of a useful' galloper. With the work she is getting in the interval Te Ngeru will command a solid following when she is' produced at the coming fixture at Te Kuiti. Regent is' ' well advanced in condition for racing, as owner-trainer. H. Barr has been working him constantly at Te Rapa for nearly three months. iThe Marble Arch—Kakama gelding was started among the sprinters, on both days of the Waikato meeting on his home track, but he failed to be prominent. Regent has seen his best'day and the field will require to be a weak one if he is going to. score:
