DESTRUCTION OF HAWKS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this ;day. A competition for the dcstr'ction of hawks was promoted by the Whangarei Acclimatisation Society amongst primary schools throughout the district and resulted in thedestruction of 460 birds in three months. The winning school forwarded 7G pairs of legs and the second school 40. Advice has been received from the UnderSecretary of the Department of I>and s of the appointment of Messrs.. Neil D. Ali»on, C. Chapman, A; Clapham, W. Cleaver, and F. Pilbrow as a domain board to have control of the Ruakaka Domain-. - At a meeting of the Whangarei County Council, Mr. J. H. Hayward, representing the Maunu Riding, said in view of the fact that the Wain Highways Board would only provide £4000 per year on a to fur £1 basis, plus free money for formation, and that the money was only sufficient to undertake one-highway out of the four adjacent to Whangarei, he considered no time should ■ be lost in securing the council's share of the available fund. He submitted- a scheme in respect of the Whangarei-Maunga-tapere main highway, but the question was raised whether the Kamo-Hikurangi highway was not the more Important. Furtuer consideration ot the scheme was postponed until next meeting. Advice was received from the Public Trustee that the application for a loan of iIOOO for metalling Waipu I North River Road had been refused. However, the Public Trustee had agreed to resubmit the application to the investment board.
