CYCLING.

CASH RIDERS' SEASON.

REVIEW OF EVENTS.

In the season just closed first among the cash riders who showed improved form was J. Lindop. He proved conclusively by his win in the Auckland Athletic and Cycling Club's road championship that as a fast finisher down t£e Mangere Hill to the post near the bridge lie is in a class by himself. Whether he could reproduce that same sprint on the flat is a question that many followers of the game are asking. Lindop's places for the season are two firsts one third, and two fastest times.

F. Prior, with 12J fastest time prizes to his credit for the 1928 season, stands alone as a consistent performer. He seldom missed a Saturday at Mangere, and although in nine out of ten of the races that he started in he was on his own, he came right from the scratch mark to secure these coveted honours.

J. Henderson and N. Healey were mentioned in last week's notes. The former always consistent, keeps getting into places; while the latter, though he went off towards the end of the season, won three good races brilliantly at the beginning.

S. Hayes, one of Auckland's best road riders did not take seriously to the racing last season, business Jatterly preventing him from having his Saturday afternoon's enjoyment. He should be one of Auckland's leading attractions during the coming track season.

G. Hall, ex-amateur, started off with a great rush, winning three races in a very short time. He seemed to go off after that, and towards the end of the season was never dangerous.

W. Archer also went well early in the season, winning two good races, and securing one second and two thirds. There was seldom a Saturday missed by this rider, who on one or two occasions rode like a champion.

F. Potter, ex-amateur, has one first and two thirds to his credit for season 1928. He showed head work early in the year, but towards the end developed into a champion pacemaker, doing considerably more than his share of lap taking.

W. Francis finished up the season one of the fittest of the cash riders. His season has been a most successful one, three firsts, three thirds and one fastest time going to.Jiis credit. He was third on the list for honours, showing splendid staying powers and great finishing ability in all his .races; '«

T. Kennelly, with one win, two seconds and one third, is another rider who rode remarkably well earlier in the season. At the end he was still going well, but was just missing getting a place. K. J. Mathieson is another very much improved rider: As a sprinter few would care to take him on in a slow run race, but once the pace is on he seems to lose his punch* He has one first, one second, three thirds, and one fastest time to his credit.

The most unlucky rider right through the season was undoubtedly K. Rae, who has had three seconds and three thirds. A win would have been popular with the public, and riders alike. He rode very consistently right through, but just could not get there.

P. Rickman, with one first and two thirds; N. Whyte, with one first and one second; R. Barry, one second; and two third,®; W. Hill, one first; F. Xowndes, dead h§fot for first, two seconds, one third; - D. Storey, two seconds, one third and two "fastests"; and O. S. Young, one third, were also included in the prize list.

The two special prizes donated to the Auckland Cycling Club's Hamilton to Auckland rOad race, for fastest time between Otaliuhu and the Show Grounds, and for the most meritorious performance, have been won by J. Henderson, Auckland, in the former, and J. Lindop, late of Westport, in the latter.
