INFECTIOUS DISEASES.

PNEUMONIA AND SCARLET FEVER

There were 195 cases of infectious disease reported in the Auckland health district last month, included in which were 47 scarlet fever cases, 41 of pneumonia, 29 for diphtheria, and 29 for tuberculosis, A case of leprosy was also reported, the patient having "contracted the disease outside New Zealand. It was in the incipient stage, and the sufferer was immediately transferred to the island of Makogai—the leger station in the Pacific—where many cures have already been effected. According to a return issued by Dr. Thos. Hughes, medical officer of health for Central Auckland district, the follow;ng cases of infectious disease were notified to him:—Scarlet fever, 27; diphtheria, 18; enteric fever, 1; tuberculosis, 11; poliomyelitis, 1; influenza (pneumonic), 1; leprosy, 1; pneumonia, 10; erysipelas, 4; puerperal fever, 4; eclampsia, 5; tetanus, 2; ophthalmia neonatorum, 1. A total of 92 cases. Dr. J. Boyd, medical officer of health for the South Auckland district, has supplied the following figures for his territory:—Scarlet fever, 13; diphtheria, 4; enteric fever, 3; tuberculosis, 11; influenza (pneumonic), 1; pneumonia, 10; erysipelas, 1; puerperal fever, 1; a total of 44. The total number of infectious diseases reported to Dr. Herbert Chesson, medical officer of health in the North Auckland and Thames-Tauranga districts was 5!), made up as follows:—North Auckland district: Scarlet fever, 7; diphtheria, 2: enteric fever, 4; tuberculosis, 3; influenza (pneumonic), 2; pneumonia, 12; erysipelas, 1; puerperal fever, 3; eclampsia, 1; total 35. Thames-Tauranjra district: Diphtheria, 5; enteric fever S;< tuberculosis, 4; pneumonia, 3: erysipelas, 3; puerperal fever, 1; total 24.
