NEW ZEALAND CUP.

CJ.C. SPRING MEETING.

PROGRAMME FOR TO-MORROW.

THE FIELDS REVIEWED

The spring meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club will open at Riccarton tomorrow. This is the most important Jlxture in the Dominion, with the exception of the Auckland summer fixture, and with the excellent fields engaged it should be a most successful one.

The Spring Hurdles. The programme will open with the Spring Hurdles, for which seven are carded. Nukumai's performances are well known, and it is only nece-sary to say that he won the Grand National Hurdle Race at Riccarton in August with 11.11 and has now 121b more, but he is meeting a much weaker field. Nucleus won the Trial Hurdle Race at the same fixture, and was second in the Spreydon Hurdle Race, while Beaumont annexed the second hurdle race, one mile and ahalf at the recent Wellington meeting. Diana's Lad has performed well over hurdles this season, winning the Kennels Hurdle Race at the Christchurch Hunt meeting, and the Hunters' Hurdles at the Grand National fixture, while at the recent Dunedin meeting he annexed the Spring Hurdle Race, one mile and threequarters, very easily. Cariuthia won the Styx Hurdle Race at Riccarton and was second in both hurdles races at the Dunedin spring meeting. Nine of Spades has shown ability over hurdles as has Troilus. The public may go for NUKUMAI DIANA'S LAD BEAUMONT.

The Hack Event,

The Spring Plate, which is run at special weights, has a field of 26, and it will provide backers with plenty of food for thought. Smithereens won the Woolston Plate, six furlongs, at the Grand National meeting, while Panther, after finishing second to Taboo over six furlongs at Wellington last July was made favourite for the Winter Cup at Riccarton, but failed to get into the money. Historic was second in the Avonhead Handicap, seven furlongs, and won the Redcliffes Handicap of similar distance at the Grand National meeting, and accounted for the Tararua Handicap, one mile, at Trentham recently. Mendip was second to Historic in the latter event, just being beaten by a head and is stated to have been unlucky. Moorgas was second in the Hawke's Ba,y Guineas to Toxeuma, while he was placed on two occasions at the Wanganui meeting. Philippic won the Trial Stakes at the Canterbury summer meeting, which is his only success, though he was second in his only start as a two-year-old. Beau Geste was third in the Akaroa Handicap, one mile and a-quarter, en Monday, while previously this season he scored over a mile at Ashburton and also at Kurow. Mark Mint showed good form last season winning three six-fur-long events, while he was placed on several other occasions. Teri showed good form by running second to Goshawk over a mile on the second day of the recent Wellington meeting. Malmsey has performed well up to a mile and aquarter during- the last few months, while Quarterdeck was placed at Dunedin and Wanganui. Phastar won over seven furlongs at the Dunedin spring meeting, while Cashier, after performing well over six furlongs, was third in the Great Northern Guineas. Concentrate was a useful two-year-old and showed form on his recent visit to Australia. Sharpshooter has a lot of pace, while Roserea has been galloping well at Rier : arton recently. Lucky Light and Sarnia may be the best of the others. The principal fancies may be:

MENDIP HISTORIC KOSCREA. The Linwood Handicap. Some of those engaged in the Linwood Handicap are also in the Spring Plate. Panther, who is top weight, and Phastar are amqng them, and their performances have been dealt with. Desert Lad has performed fairly well this season, being second in a six-furlong race and deadheating with Cashier in a similar event at Wanganui. Noteworthy won the Cashmere Plate, six furlongs, at tae Grand National meeting, wh:ie he was second over six furlongs at Dunedin, and was third in the Dunedin Guineas. Camisader was second in a six and a seven-furlong race at Geraldine, while Denier beat Silver Rule in the Flying Hack Handicap, six furlongs, at Waverley. Silver Rule has a lot of pace, performing well as a two-year-old last season, while she was second at Waverley. Chide showed good form at the Banks Peninsula meeting on Monday, and Red Heckle won in his only start as a two-year-old last season. Pound Note, Freeze Out and Impertinence may appeal most of those lower down. Probably the best backed may be:

NOTEWORTHY CHIDE. FREEZE OUT.

The Big Event.

The scratching of Star Stranger and Footfall, owing to lameness, is to be regretted, for it will rob the New Zealand Cup of a great deal of interest. Count C'avour and Rapier now head the handicap, and on recent form the latter will have a large following. He won both the New Zealand Cup and the Auckland Cup last season, and recently beat a good field in the Harcourt Cup, one mile and a quarter, at Trentham. Beacon Light has not done much racing for a long time, but he was fourth in the Wellington Handicap, though he finished last in the Harcourt Cup. Set Sail has shown ability up to a mile.and a-half, but the distance may be just a bit beyond her. Pink Note has run some good races over a mile and a-half, being second i n the Wellington Cup, winning the Dunedin Cup and the Mosgiel Handicap (one mile and a-quarter), while he was third in the Wellington Handicap to Goshawk and Mask. Black Mint won the Birthday Handicap at Dunedin, one mile and a-half, while Oratrix was second in the Metropolitan Handicap in Sydney, one mile and five furlongs. Rotor performed well last season, winning four events and being placed on nine other occasions. His best performance over a distance was in •winning the Amberley Cup, one mile and a-quarten This season he was just beaten by Town Bank in the Islington Handicap, one mile ana a-quarter, at

the Grand National meeting. Hoylake may have most friends of the others. The best backed may be RAPIER, ORATRIX, PINK NOTE.

The Two-Year-Olds. The Welcome Stakes is one of the principal two-year-old races in the Dominion. Admiral Drake won well at Wellington on the first day, but wae beaten into third place on the second. First Money showed a lot of ])aee at Ellerslie when he won the Musket Stakes. Ho was unlucky in getting left badly in the Welcome Stakes. Gold Tinge wen the Breeders' Plate in Sydney, but failed in the Wellesley Stakes. However, it must be said that he had not a great deal of .time to recover from his trip. Honour is the record-priced youngster purchased by Mr. G. D. Greenwood at the Trentham sales last January, but he has not raced. Stealth was third to Aspiring and Francolin in the McLean Stakes at Dunedin, and won the Dominion Handicap the next day. Aspiring has only had one race—the McLean Stakes—and won easily. Speed Light has only started twice —the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui and Wellesley Stakes at Trentham—for two wins. Francolin may be the best of the others. The principal fancies may be SPEED LIGHT, ASPIRING, FIEST MONEY.

The Apprentices , Plate,

Quarterdeck, who heads the list in the Apprentices' Plate is also in the Spring Plate earlier in the day, but if reserved for this event should go well. Waterlow won at the Akaroa meeting on Monday, while Zeuxis scored over seven furlongs at Geraldine. Starshooter has plenty of pace, ard was second to Noteworthy over six furlongs at the Grand National meeting. Of the others All Comment may have the best following Perhaps the favourites will be QUARTERDECK, STARSHOOTER, WATERLOW.

The Stewards' Handicap,

A classy field of sprinters is carded for the Stewards' Handicap. Cimabue has a lot of pace, and showed up in his races in Australia recently. Last season he performed prominently in many important sprint events in New Zealand, and his victories included tho Railway Handicap at Trestham, in which he carried 8.10 and ran the disance in I.IO J. He was beaten in the Suburban Handicap on the same course by Bright Glow in 1.11, carrying 9.6. He won the Electric Handicap at Ellerslie very comfortably, and also annexed the Manawatu Stakes with 9.2. He will only need to be at his best to run a good race. Crown Area was second to Eulalie in the Stewards' Handicap last season, and judging by his effort at Trentham recently he will be one of the hardest to dispose of. Booster showed up in his races at the same meeting. Silvermine has raced consistently this season, and will be fancied, while Silver Paper has an unbeaten certificate this season. Bright Glow showed a lot of speed last season, and if properly ri<*ht should be in the firing line at the finfsh. Money Order may require a bit of racin* before he is at his best, but Paperchase ran well in her only start at Thinedin recently. Childsplay was a very fast two-year-old, and that she has not lost any of her speed was proved by her running in the Dunedin Guineas. Arrow Lad was second to Consent at Trentham, and won the Nainai Handicap the next dav Chelone won at the Grand National meeting, while Consent was successful at Trentham last month. The chief selections when the machine closes may ARROW LAD. SILVER PAPER. CROWN AREA.

The Concluding Event. TLe meeting will conclude with the Riccarton Handicap, and probably the public will go for MANDANE, FIRST SIGHT, VIGILANCE.
