UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF.
MR. ALLEN AT AVONDALE
Mr E R. Allen, United party candidate for the Auckland Suburbs, addressed the electors of Avondale Flats in the Victoria Hall, Rosebank Road, last evening. He explained the policy of his party and drew attention to the economic position of the country. It was a shame that there should be so much unemployment. The senseless immigration policy of the Government was responsible for many of our troubles in this respect. Men were deluded by attractive pamphlets and advertisements broadcast in the Homeland and came out to New Zealand thinking that conditions were as represented. He did not blame the immigrants. They thought they were doing- the -ight thing for themselves and families, but in many instances the result v-ae broken hearts and a pining to get back. It was tragic There should be a total cessation of immigration until such time as a sensible land policy wae placed on the Statute Book, and the only party to achieve that desirable end was the United party. Mr. Allen drew attention to the finances of the Highways Board. There was a million of money lying idle to the credit of the board and this should be made availa>ble immediately for the relief of unemployment at standard wages. (Applause.) Hβ wished it to be known as widely as possible that he did not stand for Marxian views as held by the leader of the Labour party. This statement was challenged by a small noisy section at the back of the hall, who came late, but Mr. Allen scored off their interruptions, and, despite an attempt to have a hostile motion carried, the candidate was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence.
