FAULTS AND FAILINGS.

TOTALISATOR CRITICISED.

(Received 12.30 p.m.)

MELBOURNE, this dav.

The much-discussed totalisator evoked an interesting diversity before a Parliamentary Select Committee on the racing machine. It was warmly supported bv the secretary of the Victoria Racing Club, but the secretary of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club declared that racing would be impossible without betting. No one would attend, while the totalisator alone would produce an undesirable class in hosts of illegal bookmakers. The machine, he said, would also greatly increase the number of small bets. His personal opinion was that bookmakers alone, as at present, provided the best system.
