A CLOSE CALL.
OFFICER'S MIRACULOUS ESCAPE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
SUVA, October 21
One of the most miraculous escapes from certain death was the lot of four of the officers of the C.S.R. Co.'s steamer Rons while the vessel lay off Malau, the port for Labasa on Vanuo Levu. The party, consisting of Chief Officer Parker, second Officer Stafford, Wireless Operator Risley, and Chief Steward Telford, went out in a ship's cutter to fish. They had gone some.distance outside the reef when the boat capsized. For three long hours the men hung on, hoping against hope that someone would see them. When things looked at their worst B.P.'s schooner Makoa came out from Labasa and saw the boat. Running down she soon had the whole party safe on board much exhausted. Restoratives were applied and the boat righted, and the Rona was safely reached later. The party were little the worse for their experience, but it was a very close call.
