LADIES' GOLF.
AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP.
SEMI-FINAL MATCHES.
KEENLY CONTESTED GAMES
The semi-final matches of 18 holes in the Auckland ladies' provincial golf championship were played at Titirangi links this morning in perfect weather.
Mrs. Dufaur (Titirangi) defeated Mrs. Marshall (Auckland), 2 and 1; Miss D. Horton (Titirangi) beat Mrs. Ferguson (Auckland), 2 and 1. As is often the case when the strain is on, none of the players showed their best golf, but both matches were particularly keenly contested, that between Mrs. Dufaur and Mrs. Marshall particularly so. In fact, this game was remarkable for the fact that after Mrs. Dufaur had won the eighth hole, being then 2 up, the succeeding nine holes were halved, enabling the Titirangi player to get the win on the advantage gained in the early stages of the match. It was an exceedingly determined effort by Mrs. Marshall, which might have pulled the game off against one of less equable temperament than Mrs. Dufaur. They played out the final hole, which also was halved. Mrs. Dufaur did the round in 84, and Mrs. Marshall in 87, both getting 40 for the second half. Mrs. Marshall won the first hole in 5—6, lost the next, 5—4, and won the third, 4—6. The fourth was halved in s's, but Mrs. Dufaur squared the game at the fifth with a 5 to her opponent's 7. At this stage Mrs. Marshall was unsteady, losing the sixth, 6—5, halving the next in 3's, and losing the eighth, 6—4. They halved the ninth in sixes, and turned for home with Mrs. Dufaur 2 up. The ensuing eight holes were halved in 5—3, 5 —5, 4—5, 4 —6, Mrs. Dufaur thus winning a remarkably grim match, 2 and 1.
Miss D. Horton at one stage looked like producing the beet golf of the morning, and, despite a 7 at the sixth hole, she went out in 43, being then 2 up. Mrs. Ferguson had taken 46. Miss Horton was at her best in the next two holes, recording a 4 and a 3, but then both players lapsed to halve the following two in 6 and 7. A mutual recovery saw the fourteenth halved in 3. At this stage Miss Horton appeared to have the match won, being dormy 4. But Mrs. Ferguson made a strong challenge and Miss Horton's putting suffered lapses for the next two, which the Auckland Club lady won, 5 —6. The seventeenth was halved in 5, giving Miss Horton the win, 2 and 1. The final between Mrs. Dufaur and Miss Horton will be played to-morrow.
