"TOO MUCH PARTY."
A REFORMER'S VIEW.
MR. MASSEY AT FRANKLIN,
Repeating his assertion that he did not wish to benefit by the reputation of his late father, Mr. J. N. Massey, Reform candidate for Franklin, addressed a meeting of about 200 Franklin electors last night. He said he had been approached with a request to carry the Country party's banner, but he would not change his views, and did not believe that that party would get very far.
Mr. Massey said he was of opinion there was too much party in Parliament, and not enough business. Improvements could be made in the State Advances Department and additional capital should be made available to farmers. The late Prime Minister and the chairman of directors of the Bank of New Zealand had warned the people that they were living in a fools' paradise. The people had been told the day of reckoning would come, and had been cautioned against land speculation. He thought the bedrock had now been reached.
A Voice: Are you a member of the Farmers' Union?
The Candidate: I am not, and I cannot agree with them. I do not think a great deal of some of the executive.
"Is that a reflection on myself?" asked a member of the audience.
Mr. Massey: I am glad you mentioned it. Ido not refer to you at all. "Oil and water do not mix." replied Mr. Massey, when asked if he would agree to an amalgamation with Labour should Reform get into difficulties.
A vote of thanks and confidence was accorded the candidate.
