LADIES' GOLF.

AUCKLAND PROVINCIAL TITLE.

FIRST ROUND RESULTS.

PLAY AT TITIRANGI.

There was not very much excitement at the Titirangi links this morning, when the first round of the Auckland provincial ladies' open championship was played, several of the competitors winning by good margins. Eight matches were played. In the match between Miss D. Horton and Miss Upton, both played fairly good golf, and were evenly matched. Mies Horton was one up at tne turn, but the pair were all square after the seventeenth. A ten-foot putt won Miss Horton the eighteenth and the match. Mrs. Hosking scored a very comfortable win against Mrs. Beattie, whose driving was easily the strongest part of her game. Mrs. Beattie won only one hole.

There was little outstanding in the match between Mrs, Dufaur and Mrs. Buttle, Mrs. Dufaur winning 3 up and 1.

Against Mrs. Banister, Mrs. J. Wilson went out in 40. On long shots the pair were evenly matched, but Mrs. Wilson's better putting won her the match. Mrs. Wilson twice stymied her opponent.

In the game between Miss Rathbone and Miss Easton, the first-named was in good form, while Miss Easton's play was considerably below her usual standard, Miss Rathbone winning by a big margin.

Last year's runner-up for the title, in the person of Mrs. Deighton, was eliminated by Miss M. Macfarlane. Mrs. Deighton was two up at the turn but laid herself a stymie at the fourteenth. Thence to the finish she was unable to reproduce the same form as she showed going out

Mrs. Marshall's steadiness gave her the win over Miss Acheson, of Nelson, the only outside competitor. The Auckland lady went out in 41. Mrs. Acheson, who is a well-known competitor in open tournaments, was a long way below her best form.

A very close match resulted from the meeting of Mrs. Ferguson and Mrs. Alison, the pair going to the 20th before Mrs. Ferguson got the win. There was little difference between the pair, both missing several short putts. At the 14th Mrs. Ferguson almost registered a one, the ball stopping within nine inches ! of the cup. Results:— Miss D. Horton beat Miss Upton, one up; Mrs. Hosking beat Mrs. Beattie, 6 and o; Mrs. Dufaur beat Mrs. Buttle, 3 and 1; Mrs. Wilson beat Mrs. Banister, 3 and 1; Miss Rathbone beat Miss Easton, 8 and 7; Miss M. Macfarlane beat Mrs. Deighton, two up; Mrs. Marshall beat Miss Acheson, 5 and 3; Mrs. Ferguson beat Mrs. Alison at the 20th. Second round games are being played this afternoon as follows:—Mrs. Marshall v. Miss Macfarlane, Mrs. Dufaur v. Mrs. Wilson, Mrs. Hosking v. Mrs. Ferguson, Mis 3 Horton v. Miss Rathbone. The semi-finals will be played to-mor-row and the final on Friday. In the bn;-pv competition, B. Division, the best were: Mrs. Hutchinson 1 up, "ii all square.
