"BROKE" IN SYDNEY.
STOWAWAY ON VUUAROA. FINED AMOUNT OF HIS FARE. After the Ulimaroa left Sydney last Friday, John O'Brien (32), a shearer, was found on board without a ticket. On arrival of the boat at Auckland yesterday, O'Brien was handed over to the police as a stowaway. He pleaded guilty to the charge at the Police Court this morning. Sub-Inspector McCarthy said that O'Brien was a New Zealander, who had been in Australia for some time. He had no money, and, desiring to get back home, he stowed away.
"I was broke in Sydney, sir, and wanted to get back here for the shearing (Season, accused told Mr. Hunt.
O'Brien was fined £6 10/, the amount of the steerage fare, in default, 14 days' imprisonment.
