MOUNT ALBERT BOROUGH
GLADSTONE ROAD CROSSING,
At last night's meeting of the Mount Albert Borough Council, presided over by Mr. L. E. Rhodes, advice was received from the Minister of Railways that preliminary work on the Gladstone Road railway crossing showed that an overhead bridge would be necessary. It was not likely, however, that this scheme could be carried into effect till four years after the duplication of the line had been commenced. Attention was drawn to the fact that one death had already occurred this year at the crossing, and it was decided to request that the work be expedited.
Evidence of building progress in the borough was contained in the half-yearly return furnished by the building inspector (Mr. L. Dodds). During the period 232 permits were issued, to a total value of £77,721. Of this figure £42,042 represented the cost of dwellings. Since September 14 last alterations, additions, new buildings, etc., had been erected to the value of £10,304.
Acting on the recommendation of the Finance and Legal Committee, it was resolved that the Mayor and town clerk should inquire into the feasibility of leasing a property of ten acres near the quarry for recreation purposes. Should this prove practicable, the Auckland Cricket Association and the council will discuss conditions on which the ground might be mutually used.
MOUNT ROSKILL ROAD BOARD. A meeting of the Mount Roskill Road Board was held last night, -when there were present: Messrs. E. F. Jones (chairman), G. E. Tansley, E. A. Pearce, S. Scarborough, A. Roberts, E. Foote, and J. Donald. Claim for Damages.—A claim of £20 was received from Mrs. Haydock for alleged .injury sustained by her son through his foot in a drain pipe in Landscape Road on October 3 last. The reply of the engineer (Mr. J. D. Whitmore) was to the effect that the drain pipe referred to is a nine-inch concrete pipe vertically set in the ground as a protection to a four-inch scour valve at the intersection of Three Kings Road and Landscape Road West. The top of the pipe finishes practically flush with the surface of the ground, and filled with scoria rocks. There is a street lamp opposite. The engineer's report was accepted, and the board declined to admit any liability in the matter.
The Drive.—Mr. W. E. Bush, city engineer, wrote accepting the offer of the board to contribute the sum of £1250 as Mount Roskill's share of the cost of the reconstruction of The Drive, a boundary road between Auckland and Mount Roskill. The board's engineer suggested an alteration in the levels of The Drive, and this being approved, the board returned the plans to Mr. Bush with this alteration.
Committee's Report.—The Works Committee reported having had a conference with the Wesley College Trust Board for the new roading of the Trust Board's* property, lying between Dominion Road and Parau Street. Mr. Simmonds attended the meeting last night, and discussed an agreement with the board which was afterwards referred back to the Works Committee. The same committee recommended that a street light be erected at the corner of Berwick Avenue and Winstone Road, and that the Auckland Electric Power Board be asked to put a lamp in Ridge Road, and also be informed that the light in. Quest Terrace is not operating. These recommendations were adopted. Building Permits.—Ten permits for new buildings were issued during the fortnight worth;. £4067.
Finance.—The general account is in debt £7984 6/7. Accounts amounting to £455 passed for payment. Refuse Destructor. —Mr. H. W. Brook offered to sell to the board 10 acres of land in White Swan Road, as a site for a refuse destructor, for £100 an acre. The offer was declined.
Dominion Road Extension.—Mr. S. Trevor Dibble submitted for the board's approval plans find specifications of the extension of Dominion Road, through Winstone Park. Mr. Dibble stated that he hoped to have, the road completed by next February. A report from the engineer was read, suggesting several alterations in the planß, and these were ordered to be forwarded to Mr. Dibble.
