MR. STERLING'S SALARY.
MR. COATES DOESN'T LIKE IT. APPOINTMENT DEFENDED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) NGARUAWAHIA, Tuesday. "As for the salary of £3500 a year, well, I don't like it, but I believe we have got a man who will do the job and will earn that amount," said the Prime Minister in his campaign speech tonight, when referring at some length to the appointment of the general manager of railways. "Apart from anything that the Labour party may say the Minister of Railways is the one to judge and the responsibility is on him," Mr. Coates declared. "The whole thing does not amount to a row of pins, and there are men in the railway service who have been treated far more generous lv than Mr. Sterling. He will retire on superannuation in the same manner as other members of the railway service. Mr. Sterling has to serve his period of 40 years before he will be able to draw his superannuation, which will amount to about £2300 a year. He has now completed 27 years' service, so that he has still some time to go."
