UNITED PARTY'S DEMAND.
RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT. ATTACK ON REFORM. Mr. A. J. Stallworthy, United party candidate for Eden, was given a good reception at Walters Road last evening. Mr. Leßoy presided. The candidate caustically criticised the drift in the Dominion away from representative government into a system of bureaucratic control by Ordere-in-Council. The British rule of law, interpreted as "absence of arbitrary power on the part of Government and equality before the law," the envy of other peoples, was being seriously infringed. Moreover, the control of the public purse, so jealously guarded by the Mother of Parliaments, and having so great significance in the historic development of responsible government, wae being filched from the people, who, as a result, were much overgoverned and over-taxed. The responsibility for the unemployed situation rested largely with the Reform Government's blunder over soldier settlement —the most colossal mistake in the history of the Dominion—the mistaken policies of the Dairy Control Act, overassisted immigration, and Government interference with legitimate private enterprise. It was a national loss that the country, which gave our boys and girls birth, would not in so many cases give them work. Mr. Stallworthy gave an exposition of the United party's policy and after many questions were answered, he wae given an almost unanimous and very cordial vote of thanks and confidence.
