MILITARY BOXING.

A.M.S.A. FIRST NIGHT.

MORE BOUTS THIS EVENING.

Nothing could demonstrate more clearly the popularity which has been achieved by the military boxing tournaments than the large " house" which greeted the opening programme of a four nights' tourney at the Drill Hall last night. Ring equipment and arrangements were of the , high standard with which the A.M.S.A. has commanded its popularity, and it soon became clear that instructors had done a deal of preliminary work, for the military machine snapped through a schedule of 34 bouts without a single bad match in the lot. The cadet section occupied the evening, in which lads of all shapes and temperaments, running from paperweight to welter, showed their paces. Naturally there was a deal of rawness among some of the contestants, but the general spirit and the manner in which the material had been shaped up to a presentable all-round standard at once commended the boxing to enthusiasts. In equipment and handling, the tourney in every respect was a model of efficiency, and the boxing standard indicates that as the bouts approach the finals, with the addition of the territorial events, it will become increasingly interesting.

To-night it will be advanced a stage. The results of the opening bouts are:— PAPER-WEIGHT CLASS, 7st. M. R. Bennett (28th Coy.), 7st, beat L. W. D. Ball (24th Coy.), 7st. D.
