DOMINION'S BEST SCULLER.
PROPOSED MATCH WITH PEARCE. SUGGESTION FROM WANGANUI. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WANGAXUI,'Monday. There is a movement in hand to arrango a fitting reception for the Wanganui Union Boat Club crew on their return from Australia next week. Their victory at Henley on Yarra has stimulated interest in rowing and hopes are entertained that the New Zealand Council will see to it that a New Zealand eight and sculler compete at the big regatta in Sydney on December. 22. Local feeling is strongly in favour of the- Dominion champion sculler being sent across to measure blades with H. R. Pearce, the Olympic champion, and are willing to make a liberal contribution if necessary for that end, if the executive accept the invitation. Pearce is declared to be wonderfully fit and a fine sculler. Webb and Arnst, however, showed that our best were equal to Australia's best in the past, and the opinion is firmly held that Jackson, the present amateur champion, will prove a real top notcher with experience, even if not capable of beating Pearce. The hope is expressed that the Dominion Council will favourably consider the matter at to-morrow night's meeting and dccide to send the sculler to Sydney, and also an eight if possible. The council has been criticised recently for lack of punch in its control of rowing. Here is an opoprtunitv for the authorities to justify their claim to be alive to the best interests of rowing.
