LIQUOR RUNS TO WASTE.

VALUABLE CONSIGNMENT DAMAGED. About £50 worth of French spirits was lost by breakages out of a consignment transhipped to Auckland by the Maheno from Sydney. Thirty cases • inspected by the Customs officers yielded 70 broken containers, including 56 quart bottles and a number of flasks. As the cargo has been transhipped several times in the course of its voyage from France, it is not yet known who will have to stand the cost of the damage. In view of the fact that the cases were quite dry, every drop of liquor having evaporated, it is probable that the damage was done before the cases were loaded into the Maheno.
