LEGISLATIVE NEGROES.

Selection of a negro to succeed the late Representative Martin B. Madden of Chicago, would by no means set a precedent.

Twenty negroes * have served the house. Two negroes have occupied seats in the senate. The last negro member retired from the house 27 years* ago.. The first entered Congress in 1869.

The-two negro senators were Hiram B. Revels, of Mississippi, who served in 1870 and 1871, and B. K. Bruce, of the same State, who was in the Senate from 1875 to 1881.

Of the twenty negroes in the House four were from North Carolina, eight from South Carolina, three from Alabama and one each from Virginia, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida and Louisiana.
