TROTTING CLASSICS IN U.S.A. Eight of the greatest 3-year-old trotters in America contested the "Horse Review" Futurity for 3-year-old trotters, including the previous year's 2-year-old cracks, Spencer and Scotland. The race went four heats before Guy Abbe won two heats and the race. Spencer, Scotland and the winner were participants in the terrible smash the previous week. The first heat was won in by Spencer from Gaylworthy. The second heat was won by Gaylworthy from Spencer in 2.5 J. Guy Abbe then came on the scene and won the third heat from Gaylworthy in 2.GJ and the fourth from Spencer in 2.145.

The unfairness of heat racing from an Australian point of view was shown in this race. While Gaylworthy and Spencer had been racing one another to win the first and second heats, Guy Abbe must have been having a comparatively easy time in finishing third and fifth in the respective heats. He then came out and won the third and fourth. How Gaylworthy and Spencer must have run themselves to a standstill was shown by Guy Abbe only having to do 2.14 J to win the fourth heat.

Spencer had his revenge in the Hambletonian Stake for 3-year-old trotters, which carried stake money to the extent of £13,445.

There was tedious "scoring" for the first heat, the colts being brought back time after time, and it really seems remarkable that the Americans should continue their style of starting races merely for old tradition sake.

Spencer was taken to the front, trotting the first quarter in 29is and the half in I.o}. It was thought the buret of speed would tire him, but he kept on, racing to the three-quarters in 1.31), and beating Scotland by two clear lengths in 2.2}.

When they sent the second heat away Scotland was lengths back. Spencer again showed himself master of the field, setting his own pace and beating Guy Abbe by half a length in 2.4. Spencer is a bay colt by Lee Tide (2.1 J as a four-year old) from Petre (2.52 as a three-year-old) by Peter the Great (2.7} as a four year-old). The previous season as a two-year-old Spencer .made a record of 2.5}.

Of the ten marvellous colts, with a couple of exceptions, the entire field heat 2.5 during the race, Cohurn, who finished fourth in the first heat, being separately timed to do 2.3}. The order of betting on the race was Red Aubrey, Spencer, Guv Abbe, Gavlworthy, Scotland and Coburn.
