LINGERING DOUBT.
BYWATERS MURDER CASE.
(Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (Received 1.30 p.m.)
LONDON, October 25.
The Earl of Birkenhead in a new book, "More Famous Trials," issued to-day, makes the surprising admission of a lingering doubt as to the guilt of Mrs. Thompson, in the famous Bywaters case.
"Admitting that she planned and plotted the murder, recognising that if I had presided at the trial I would have directed the jury as Justice Shearman did, realising as a member of the Court of Criminal Appeal, that I should likewise have found no reason for quashing the verdict, nevertheless I still find a small lingering doubt as to whether Mr 3. Thompson was present at the crime, if she arranged it or, indeed, whether she had any idea that such a crime would be attempted."
