A SUSPECTED CUSTOMER
ARRESTED FOR SHOPLIFTING.
MARRIED WOMAN FINED £10.
"TOO OLD TO GET IMPULSES."
"This is an ordinary case of shoplifting," said Chief Detective Hammond when Elsie May Fear (47) pleaded guilty at the Police Court to-day, to a charge of stealing a nightdress, one cup and a tin of polish, valued at 4/6 from a Karangahape Road draper's store.
Mr. Hammond added that for some time accused had been under suspicion. When she entered yesterday she was watched and caught taking the articles, which she placed in a large basket. She was a married woman and her husband' was a respectable man. Mr. L. E. Manning, on accused's behalf, said that she had no reason to steal. She could not account for her action. It was evidently a sudden impulse. "She is too old to get those impulses," said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. "She is fined £10, or one month's imprisonment. In some of the other towns, magistrates are sending shoplifters to gaol without the option of a fihe." Counsel's application for suppression of the name was refused, Mr. Hunt stating that publication was the best cure for shoplifters.
