THAMES COUNTY.
TIMBER LANDS LEASES. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, this day. The Thames County Council, at a special meeting yesterday considered an application for a reduction of the rent for the Tairua Broken Hills claim from the trustees of the estate of Mr. H. H. Adams. This was opposed by Mr. Courtney, who said the company was locking up land from which the council received no revenue for many years. On the motion of Mr. McCormack, the council decided to treat the application in the same way as the last, and recommended a reduction of 1/ per acre. Notice wis received that the Crown Lands Department had agreed to accept a surrender of the leases of the Kauri Timber Company over 18,000 acres. The chairman, Mr. H. Lowe, said he understood the area would come, under the control of the Stato Forest Service, H thus would not be open for settlement.
The council decided to communicate with the Minister at once, and object to the action of the Commissioner of Crown Lands.
