VOTING PARTIES OUT.
GOVERNMENT AND LABOUR.
MR. FLETCHER'S ATTITUDE,
What we want is to get more men on to the land because that is the greatest source of wealth for this or any countrv," said Mr. J. S. Fletcher, the Uuited" party candidate for Grey Lynn, when addressing about 150 electors at St. Cuthbert's Hall last evening. Mr. J. Donald presided.
The speaker explained the borrowing proposals of Sir Joseph Ward. He said that in the main the money was required for land settlement and for the development of secondary industries. His party realised the supreme importance of a vigorous scheme of land settlement-, as for every family placed on the land two could be maintained in the eity. Therefore, when the Government of the day assisted in establishing a farm it was actually benefiting three families. Mr. iletcher criticised the Government for its inability to cope with the unemployment problem and said that more should have been done toward this end through the medium of the Main Highways Board. "If there were men of ability and resource in power," he added', "it _ would be easily possible to find attitional work for 2000 men within one month."
Replying to questions, the candidate said he was not in favour of the State carrying out any work if it could be better carried out by private enterprise, and he would apply his judgment iu that regpect to the railways. A Questioner: Last night you said von would vote against the Labour uartv. Is that so? The Candidate (with emphasis): I certainly will. (Laughter.) The Questioner: Are you prepared to vote with the Labour party to overthrow the present Government? The Candidate: I have said quite clearly that I will vote with any party to put the Government out. (Applause.) A vote of thank 6 and confidence was cairied heartily with a few voices raised in dissent.
