Noticing that a window liad * been broken, at OAo last night, Mr. William Allen stopped Constable Putt oil his beat. The constable immediately, hurried to the side of the premises,-which are easily reached from a vacant sees-; tion in Cook Street. He saw two H»eh and gave chase. After a fast run he Managed to overtake both men, ' who were carrying large parcels. While the constable was questioning one about the contents of the parcel, the other man struck the constable and ran away again, l'inding it impossible to secure the fugitive, Constable Putt made sure of the other and placed him under arrest. Subsequently this man was found to be in possession of poods alleged to .have been ' stolen from Sargood's factory.

On examination of the factory It waS discovered that the thieves had g&ined entry by breaking a pane of glass in the window nearest the fence dividing the factory from the vacant section. Altogether, ladies' underclothing, frocks and other garments worth about £80 were missing, while near the broken window there was a huge stack of goods lieaped on the floor, waiting to ba removed.
