(Australian and N.Z. Press Association.)
(Received 11 a.m.)
NEW YORK, October 22. Delivering his first, and probably his last important speech in the east, in the heart of the strongest bmith territory, namely, New York City, Mr. Hoover declared that the Democrats had revived, "A series of proposals, which, if adopted, would be a long step towards the abandonment of our American system and a surrender to the destructive operation of the Governmental conduct of commercial business."
Mr. Hoover thereafter branded as. State socialism," the prohibition, farm relief and water power proposals advocated by the Democratic candidate.
Mr. Hoover summarised as follows:— It is proposed that we change from prohibition to State purchase for the salo of liquor. Also if their agricultural relief programme means anything, it means that the Government shall directly or indirectly buy and sell agricultural products and we are to go into the hydro-electrical power business."'
