' delightful display of dancing was • given by a number ; of talented young people at St. Mark's Hall on Saturday, When an afternoon was held by Madame Edith Baird. The programme consisted of class and party dances and a number of - individual items that were much appreciated by- all who were present. Very charming numbers were: "A Pair of" Clowns" (Molly Woolcott), "Two v little Mice and a Piece of Cheese" (Enid Kelly and Mavis Kerr), "Cross Words in . , Holland" (Betty Young, Joyce LeyJones and Noel Kerr), "Autumn" (Muriel and Ethel Needham, Bessie Simm and Elaine Blair), and a ballet (Shirley King as the rabbit). Songs were artisticall j sung by Miss Amy Hansard. An enjoyable bridge party was given in the League rooms by the Victoria League Ever Ready Committee, on Thursday evening, the proceeds of which are being devoted towards defraying the cost of a sewing machine. This committee has started a sewing circle, and is making children's clothes for necessitous cases in the backblocks. Prizes were won by Mesdames T. Russell, Upfill, J. R. Mrs. Lei. Armiger's home, Albert Street, . Ellerslie, presented a very gay appearance on Saturday evening, when Mrs. - E. Dando and Miss •G. Teasdale gave an enjoyable surprise party. Mrs. Armiger received her guests wearing a very smart pink satin and tissue frock. Mrs. Dando was in coral crepe cfS chine, seqiiined, and Miss Teasdale, foam green taffeta," ; diamante and silver flower. Amongst those present were: Mrs. T. George,. wearing gold lace and. tissue; Miss M. Bowen, crushed strawberry velvet; Miss J. Kirkland, rose georgette over lace; Miss R. A very successful plain and fancy dress dance was given by the Xortli Shore Bowing.-Club In tlie Parish Hall at Devonport last night. The men's committee had transformed the hall by screening the walls with enorrr.ona nikau palms and ferns, and the coiling with rainbow tinted streamers, red balloons and- coloured light shades. More palms were used as a background on the stage, with masses of arum lilies and greenery. The Kit Kit Dance Band played excellent music, and Mr. C. Farquliarson was organiser. During the evening Miss 1. Arlen and Mr. C. Shorter gave as an exhibition dance, and for the first time in--Devonport, a Spanish tango in Spanish dress. It was much admired and received an emphatic recall. Members of the ladies'committee present were:— Mrs. But land, who wore salmon pink crepe de chine, silver tissue and pink shawl; Mrs. Farquharson, sequinned net and jet panels; Mrs. Webb, midnight blue crepe de chine and silver tissue; Mrs. C. A pleasant evening was spent at Mrs. T. Flood's residence, Huia Road, Otahuhu, on Saturday night, when a progressive 500 toot place, t! i object being to raise funds for the forthcoming Church of England bazaar. The committee assisting Mrs. Flood were: Mesdames Moore, Elliot, Kraft, K. Todd, Fearnley and Guthrie. Mr. E. Harper supervised the 500, and the winners were Mrs. Pinkey and Mrs. R. Todd first and second for the ladies, whilst Mr. G. V. Pearce was successful amongst the men. During the evening Miss E. Moffat sang "Ramona" and Mr. Kraft "Mona." A competition resulted in Mr. Capp winning a box of groceries. Among those present were the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Todd), Mr. and Mrs. G. V. A pleasant evening was held at Dun ningham Hall, Point Chevalier, on Saturday in honour of the twenty-iirst birthday of Miss Ruby .Ashdale. The Belmont Spring Show, winch was opened by the Mayoress of Takapuna. Mrs. J. W. Williamson, took place cn Saturday afternoon in the Presbyterian Hall at Belmont. The exhibits were iudjred in the afternoon, and various competitions for girls and boys in music and elocution were arranged for the evening. Winners of prizes in the different classes of exhibits were: Preserves and pickles: Marmalade, Mrs. Bruce 1, Mrs. Spooner 2; jams, Mrs. , Bruce 1, Mrs.' Pessell, 2; jellies, Miss Collett 1, Mrs. Trevurza 2; pickles, Mrs. Cambridge 1, Miss Collett 2; toffee, Miss Fraser 1; box of sweets, Miss Xandra Atkins 1, Mrs. Powell 2. Flowers and vegetables: Root vegetables, Mrs. Diver 1; best basket of fruits, Mrs. Saxon 1. Best dozen eggs, Mrs. Day 1. Cooking: Fruit cake, Mrs. Ogilvie 1; decorated sponge, Mrs. Powell 1; plain sponge, Mrs. Smith 1; shortbread, Mrs. Stokes 1; assorted cakes, Mrs. Davies 1; tarts, Mrs. Davies 1; scones, Mrs. Entwistle 1. A gas cooking demonstration was given during the afternoon, also an "enrolment ceremony for Brownies (Girl Guides), There was also an interesting display of work done-by the children of the Presbyterian Church kindergarten at Belmont.
A garden party will be held early next month in the charming grounds of Mrs. A. M. Ferguson, Victoria Avenue, to assist the fuiids of the National Council, which has a number of calls for finance. As it is a purely educational movement this often proves a difficulty, because the council has 110 funds to fall back upon. The following ladies will be in charge of the stals. The knick' knack and novelty, Miss Ernest; cakes and sweets, Mrs. Howden; produce and flowers, Mrs. Wicksteed; afternoon tea, Mrs. Prendergast; and competitions, Airs. Russell. Each wfll be assisted by friends and members.
