WELLINGTON, Monday.
In furtherance of tlie Work of the Discovery Expedition in the Antarctic Ocean Dr. E. H. Marshall arrived today from London to join/the Norwegian whaling ship C. A.'Larson, which, is due at Wellington from San Pedro on November 4 before commencing her voyage to the Rosa Sea. The Discovery, expedition was organ? ised to carry out. organised research into the life and habits of whales in the Antarctic, the prospects of their multiplication otherwise, and conditions affect-, ing seals and sea lions in those regions., The ship left England. in September, 1025, and returned in September, 1027.. It reported that the hump»back variety of Whale was undoubtedly diminishing, but that, blue whales and fin whales appeared to, be as abundant as even- .
The operations of the licensed -Ross Sea, whalers Sir .Tames Clark Ross and C. A. Larsen, and the unlicensed shin V T. NellPon Alonso during the past tlvo years have accounted for at least • r .3 00 to 6000 whales in that reeion alone. Tbe three .ships will be working again tli's senson. . . "
