AUCKLAND'S OUTING.
EXCURSIONS AND PICNICS.
THOUSANDS LEAVE CITY FOR
DAY.
Besides sports gatherings, racing fixtures and tournaments at golf courses and tennis courts to-day, a number of picnics and excursions helped to accommodate the desire of the public for a day out of doors.
Boats left for Surfdale, Cowes, Omiha, Ostend, Awaroa, Oneroa Beach, Motutapu and Rocky Bay, and in the upper reaches of the harbour for Pine Island, Hobsonville, Greenhithe, Whenuapai and Riverhead. By 10 o'clock this morning thousands of picnickers had left the wharves in launches, small steamers and ferries. Aboard some of the boats there were bands, and where there was room there was dancing on the decks.
For those who sought to spend the day in the country special buses were run to the Waitakere Ranges and other choice spots. Holiday train excursions had been arranged by the Railway Department, and there was a rush for seats on the train that left for Rotorua shortly after one o'clock on Saturday. Accommodation was provided for 1100 passengers. and by the time Huntly was reached there was hardlv a vacant seat. Throughout yesterday the excursionists explored the wonders of the thermal regions, and arrangements have been made to keep them occupied to-day. They will leave Rotorua at 4.5 this afternoon. and are due back in Auckland at 10.30. Owing to this morning's inclement weather, race trains for Hamilton and were not too well patronised. but booktn? for the Limited and second expresses this evening is heavy.
