BOWLING.
THE SEASON OPENED.
2.ARGE GATHERINGS EVERYWHERE
(By TRUNDLER.)
The remarkable popularity of bowling in Auckland was strikingly illustrated on Saturday, when no less than 18 clubs officially opened their summer season, although several others had opened on the previous two Saturdays, and the rest of the 44 clubs in the Auckland Centre are still closed for the winter. The number opening last Saturday is rather significant, as it is exactly equal to the total number of clubs in the Wellington Centre.
The centre executive adopted an excellent idea on Sautrday in dividing their strength for the afternoon, as this enabled them to visit nearly all the official openings and a few of the larger clubs. Favoured with fine weather, although not as brilliant as the competitors enjoyed at the Mount Eden tournament on Wednesday, "everything went off under most enjoyable conditions. A pleasing feature of the afternoon was the heavy visiting programme, made possible by the large number of clubs which had opened the previous Saturday, and whose members were therefore free to accept club invitations. Pukekohe members returned the visit of city bowlers to their own opening a fortnight ago, officially sending representatives on Saturday to no less than seven clubs. The association of the provincial clubs with the city has been a most agreeable development of recent years, six or eight city club now exchanging annual visits with a provincial club. Now that the roads are so much better, and motor-1 ing has become so easy, the rest will doubtless be "adopted" by a city club. No regular visits have yet been arranged with Warkworth, Taukau, Buckland and Helensville, and although the entry of Helensville in the pennant matches has disposed of the comparative isolation of that club, there is an opening for three clubs to approach the others. Pukekohe are staging a full-rink tournament on Wednesday, November 7, and as their two greens are in nice order this season a good entry should be attracted. Honouring a Bowler's Memory. A very quiet ceremony took place at the Edendale pavilion on Saturday, when Mr. T. D. Anderson presented a silver cup to the club, to be known as the "Herb Horspool memorial cup," in memory of the late Mr. Horspool, a former president of the club, who died nearly a year ago. Mr. Horspool was always very fond of pairs, and as Mr. Anderson was generally his partner he decided to keep his old friend's memory green by presenting a cup for the pairs championship of the club. The cup will always remain the property of the club, and will be on exhibition in the pavilion! but the winners will have their names engraved on it each year, and a pair of gold medals will be presented to the winners by Mr. W. J. Edwards, the president of 1922, another old friend of the late Mr. Horspool. This trophy has been instituted on very similar lines to the "Neilson memorial cup, presented a few years ago to the Onehunga Club by Mr. R. Buchanan, the present president, in memory of Mrs. Buchanan's uncle, the late Mr. Daniel Neilson, who was one of the oldest members of the club. It is awarded to the rink winning the Labour Day tournament each year, and remains the property of the club, but the winners are presented with miniature duplicates by Mr. Buchanan. Edendale membership is increased this year by nearly a dozen, chiefly experienced players from other clubs. Hew Territory at Grey Lynn. Grey Lynn is one of the many clubs entering upon the new season with high hopes. Comfortably fettled in the new freehold property, members and visitors ,on Saturday were delighted with the new green, which will be the one mainly . J5, ÜB ® this season. During the recess a great deal of work- hag been done on and around the playing areas, and also in the pavilion, where the lockers are once more ready for use. Several new members have been nominated, and the prospects of the club are most encouraging, even though a few members have been lost, mainly by removal to other districts. Having had no winter green this year, the crab recently held a reunion of members, with their wives and lady friends, •s a kind of rally before the summer season commenced. In spite of the inclemency of the weather, the gathering wai a great success, there being an attendance of about 60 enthusiasts. Much appreciated solos were given by Miss Buckley during the evening, but oldtime dances formed the main part of the programme and were entered into with zest by the great majority. The music was supplied by an excellent x orchestra, under Mr. Weir. The special feature of the evening, however, was the unveiling of enlarged photographs of past president?, presented in response to the request of the committee, which aims at the completion of the series now that the club has such a fine pavilion in which they can be hung to advantage. This year the S were: Messrs. R. H. Johnson (1915), M. J. Bennett (1916 and 1917), M u"ay (1920), John Ferguson 1928? T? ?• Newton (1924 to The President, Mr. F. J. CARLTON CLUB. There are few bowling greens in New Zealand so ideally situated as. those of the> Carlton Club and never was this morrc apparent than on Saturday afternoon, on the occasion of the official opening of the 1928-29 season. Against a background of spring gardens and dark green trees, the sun-drenched lawns presented a beautiful picture, as the president, Mr. A. B. Barter, addressed the gathering of ladies, members and visitors.
Tn a happy «peech, short and to the point, Mr. Barter likened the bowling green to the stage. The players were the actors, clad in summer raiment, each and all as happy as those with congenial parts behind the footlights. The man fortunate enough to be Carlton's president was happy indeed, for nowhere in the Dominion could one find a club that ranked higher in sportsmanship and hospitality. (Applause). He thanked all for the loyal support they accorded the club and expressed the hope that the season would be most successful. Reverting again to the simile of the stage, Mr. Barter said the play had a prologue, in which there was but one player, the president's wife. (Laughter and applause). He asked Mrs. Barter to send up the first jack.
Mrs. Barter performed her duty most graciously and the season was declared open, amid applause. Results of games played during the afternoon are as follow:— •

The weather was perfect for bowling, and the green and ground looked at their best. The club was "at home" to a large number of guests, among whom were many ladies and visiting bowlers. Representatives were present from most of the city clubs. The grounds were gaily decorated with flags, and a programme of music was played by the Ponsonby Boys' Band. The president of the club, Mr. John Schischka, in a happy little speech, declared the green open for the season. He extended a cordial welcome to the visitors, and said he hoped all would enjoy a pleasant game. He expressed the hope that the members of the Ponsonby Club would have an enjoyable season. He drew attention to the excellent order of the green, and said credit was due to the green superintendent, Mr. A. Parsons, and the greenkeeper for its condition. He made sympathetic reference to the old members of the club, who were not. able to be present with them on this occasion. He also read a telegram from the president of the Auckland Centre, Mr. S. Coldicutt, extending the best wishes of the centre and himself for a successful opening season.
The first jack was thrown by Mrs. Schischka, and the green was declared open for the season, amid cheers. The games played resulted as follow:— A. T. Good, Buckle, Kretschmar, Best 24, V. EPSOM CLUB. With flags bedight, the pavilion and grounds of the Epsom Bowling Club presented a gala appearance in the sunshine of the early afternoon, when the season was opened in the presence of a large gathering u, ladies, visitors and members. A professional band played the National Anthem, prior to the speech of the president, Mr. R. McK. Morison. "If any man in Epsom is proud this afternoon, that man is 11. McK. Morison," said the president. "I am proud to be president of this fine club, and proud to be associated with its officers.
Mr. Morison regretted that three members had been lost to the club through death during the past year, and extended to their relatives the club's most sincere sympathy. All would regret, he said, that Mr. Lock was unable to be present, owing to illness, and the absent member had the sympathy of every member. I should not be doing my duty if I did not refer to the splendid manner in which Mr. Hardley, as manager of the New Zealand touring team, represented us in England," continued the president. "Mr. Hardley never lost an opportunity of advertising the Dominion. He did most" valuable work. (Hear, hear). I know that wherever Mr. Hardley went he advised the people to eat more New Zealand mutton, more New Zealand cheese, fruit and butter. In addition he played the good old game in a manner worthy of New Zealand."
After Mrs. Walker had made the first stroke of the croquet season, and Mrs. Morison had rolled the first jack, tlie president ■ declared the season open, amid cheers.
