TOURS FOR ROYS.
AUSTRALIAN SCHEME
Addressing the Auckland Manufacturers' Association yesterday afternoon Mr. J. Tucker gave a brief outline of the young Australia League's scheme for boys' tours.
Originally, he stated, the scheme was
to take parties of boys from Western Australia for tours of other parts of their own country, but with the hearty support of the parents, the league's work had grown tremendously and tours to England and America had been successfully undertaken. His present mission was to give New Zealand boys an opportunity of joining a forthcoming tour to Canada and the United States. A hearty welcome was assured the tourists in both countries, he said. Invitations had been received from many colleges and public institutions, as well as from some of the greatest commercial concerns, offering their help in making the tour interesting and instructive. Mr. Tucker asked for the help of the association in helping forward so valuable a movement in New Zealand.
In reply to Mr. Tucker, the president of the association, Mr. G. Finn, assured him of the hearty support of every member. The association, said Mr. Finn, had recognised the great value of promoting better understanding between the countries of the world by movements such as this, and, owing to its isolated position, New Zealand would reap particular benefit. The association itself had considered the possibility of chartering a steamer for the purpose of a students' tour of the world.
Mr. B. Buttle produced a letter, dated 1903, in which he had suggested to the Hon. Richard Seddon the inauguration of some such system. He was glad that the ideas he had entertained then had been put in practice, and would give the league every help in his power.
