A GRUELLING TEST
I Students of Wesley College, Paerata, held their animal cross-coutnrv races on 'Wedensday. The contests were a gruelling test of the winners' stamina, the course being nearly seven miles in length. In places the going was very heavy, especially on the clay roads. Three races, the senior and junior open and the senior handicap, were run at once of the same course. The junior handicap was decided over a shorter course, a section of the main run. The course was commenced half-a-mile from the college, and continued along the main Auckland Road for two miles to a turn off to the clay road. This road was followed for three miles to Paerata, thence on to the Puke-kohe-Auckland Road for a further two miles to the college. The record for the distance is 50 minutes.
The race resulted: Pritchard. 2m. 1; Russell, 3m,JJ; Allen, lm, 3; Dudding' 3m, 4. Winner's time, 51m. Parland, who finished in fifth position, established the fastest time, doing the long distance in 50m 4Ss.
The junior championship was won bv Bodley, with Sutton second; and the junior handicap by Cowen, with Scott second.
