RACING NEWS.

STABLE AND TRACK NOTES

(By WHALEBONE.)

ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.

WAGER.—Staghunter defeated Cliildsplay in the Great Northern Foal Stake*, six furlongs, at Ellerslie. Double Mint has not been placed in a race in Auckland during the last nine months. She was placed twice at the Whangarei meeting last November.

Mountain Guide was a good way back in the middle stages of the Sylvia Handicap at Ellerslie 011 Saturday, but put in a good run in the straight, finishing second to The Lover. This horse should be useful on the country circuit.

Golden Wedding was a good favourite for the Sylvia Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday, but after being fourth when the field settled down dropped back. She again ran up fourth as the field came across the top, but could not improve on that position when the post was reached.

The Lover won the Sylvia Park Handicap very nicely at Ellerslie on Saturday, and Bhould be seen to advantage in much more important events before the .season is through. Going out of the straight he got a nice run 011 the rails, which put him up second to Bizarro. He took charge across the top and scored by three-quarters of a length at the finish.

Bizarro won the Ladies' Bracelet at the Pakuranga Hunt Club meeting two years ago, but he was not raced last season. He made his reappearance in the Sylvia Handicap at Ellewlie on Saturday, being prominent all the way. He had no chance with The Lovdr, with whom" he was bracketed, and just failed to withstand a run by* Mountain Guide for s'eqond honours.

Te Horefl, had Jjis. first race over the Ellerslie country on .Saturday when he contested the Greenmount Steeplechase. He wis.not hurried during the/early portion and beat all but Tago San at the finish; He Was also fourth in the Hunt Cup later :in the day. Te Horea, who is by Lucullus, and is in .the same stable as;Glendowie, is certainly a promising sort. >> *

" * \ * ' , * v' Marita looked ais though he would win the Greenmount Steeplechase at Ellerslie on Saturday when he collared Bahadur coming do,wn the hill the last time, but •Tago San had him a little later and was first into the straight, leading over the last fence which brought Marita to grief. Marita was third in the Hunt Cup at the Great Northern meeting, and looks , like winning a minor steeplechase before VI, long.

Ashleigh, By Archies who races / in the interests of Mefts& .<*. arid,J?.l> Peach, and therefore hastyhe samjfeic#-oura-as Oakleigh used to>-carry, is, "likely to make a very fair hurdler, judging by f his display in the Harris' Memorial

Hunters' Hurdle Race at Ellerslie on V Saturday. He was ahvaya! well up till straight was reached and. then tiled, ' finishing fifth. This was his first effort in public. Later in tbfe day he was 'one of those who took part in the false stal*t ;% in the Ladies' Bracelet.and finished third.

Ramblin'Kid was unlucky to be beaten # in the Hunters' Hurdles at Ellerslie on Saturday. He took charge along the 'i back and'led over the list hurdle. He •. appeared to have the race in hand, but was not ridden as vigorously, aq he might have been in the concluding stages, arid in consequence when Pekatahi came with a good run at the finish he could not be got going before* Pekatahi had bim and beat him on the post. He was distinctly unfortunate in the Ladies' Bracelet, Jjn- % ishiiig second in the first bout, being at a . long price to win.

,« Pekatahi was always in a handy posi- ,; $tioit ill the Hunters' Hurdles at the i |Pakuranga meeting on Saturday, and 4 /.once over the last fence'stayed on much i better than Ramblin' Kid- at the finish. | Pekatahi was unlucky in being one of fl those that went ttjjf at the false -start iri |the Ladies' Bracelet, by the manner ;-|in which he ran "on'that occasion, and falso when the field was finally dispatched, Mhe would/ have-beeW very hard to beat. UfHis rider throughout' the '-first, 'run for !£|.the Bracelet appeared to be in a •Iquandary, as to whether he should go on '•f or pull up. J. Buchanan has Pekatahi in ; .>£fine condition at present. Jocplyn, who won the Metropolitan at Randwick yesterday, is one of G. Price's team, and recently scored <in the Spring Handicap ,at Tattersall's - 'meeting. He .is a four-year-old by /'Rossendale, and started at a fair price. -;This . would have been one of M. McCarton's .mounts if he had not been suspended for a month. He was ridden by ; Munro,..who. thus completed the double ■ ,;for he was aboard Amqunis, who, anJ nexed the Epsom Handicap. In addition ;Munro rode Prince Hulnphrey in the ' and Gold Tinge in the Breeders' Plate. So far, with the exception of the Spring Stakes, lie has picked up all the " . ''plums" of the meeting. Bahadur looked very tender in the -'•forelegs when he went out to contest the Green mount Steeplechase at Ellerslie on 'Saturday. He led for the greater portion Of the way only being headed in the run down the hill the last time, and it was ' later seen that he had broken down. It is a pity that this horse is unsound for - ■ he has plenty of pace and can jump well, and he would take a lot of beating in' '.minor cross-country events. Sonic time - »go at Ellerslie he looked a certainty seeing the commanding lead he had when Jie was coming down the last time, but fell on the flat. He was remounted and finished third on that occasion. Beau Cavalier set out to win the Jellieoe Handicap from end to end at Ellerslie on Saturday, and as the field turned ~ along the back he had about eight lengths' advantage of Mint Lea* and Sleepy Sol. However,, when latter pair moved up after passing the yld livefurlong post Beau Cavalier dropped back very quickly'and finished last. .Since the } beginning of June Beau Cavalier has raced over steeples with big weights, has won two important hurdle races, annexed , two fiat races, and taken on the stayers oL • e sprinters in the President's Handicap at Avondale, bcsides contesting other events. He.should of due for a spell after the atrenuous > tipie he has had. . .... . . ... , ,

Violation looks a likely sort. She Was a runner in the Auckland Handicap at EllersUe and showed up for a good way. This was her first race.

Sir Archie was never dangerous in the running of the Jellicoe Handicap on Saturday and was second to last to finish.

Huirangi Girl was noticed going well for a while in the Hunt Club Steeplechase at Ellerslie on Saturday, but she had had enough when the hill was reached the last time. This was her first race over Ellerslie country.

The Paper Money three-year-old Jolly Money has been brought across to Ellerslie and will be racing at the Auck* land spring meeting. This gelding has plenty of speed and when he gets thoroughly seasoned should win some good races.

Master Lit (J. Burgess) was schooled over a couple of pony hurdles at Ellerslie yesterday morning and gave a promising display. Although he has little to his credit on the flal? he may develop into a useful hurdler, as he comes from a good jumping'strain.

Thursby won the Jellicoe Handicap in very easy fashion on Saturday. He was always handy to the leaders, and, putting in his run in the straight, soon settled Sleepy Sol and Mint Leaf. Thursby is pretty usefvsl on a soft track, and he looks in good trim at present.

J. Williamson has recommissioned The Thorn, and the Absurd gelding is among those doing light tasks at headquarters. Since he was racing last season The Thorn has been operated on for respiratory trouble, and providing good results are attained "the brown gelding should pay his way in the future.

Metallus, one of F. Tilley's team, was tried over a mile and a-quarter at the Pakuranga meeting 011 Saturday. He ran a good race till nearing the straight, being second to The Lover with three furlongs to go. He then had had enough and finished fifth. Metallus can be ex-' pected to do better. He is only a three-year-old and faces in the same colours as Mandane. /

Bert Hinkler, who finished second to Cashier in the Auckland Handicap, shaped well, considering he Was having his first face in public. He did not get away at all well and was one of those tailing the field when half the journey had been covered. He is a five-year-old gelding by Quin Abbey from Mere Mischief, the last-named being a sister to Caballero, a Waikato-owned gelding who won a number of paces around the Auckland province a few seasons ago.-

The Ta Rapa-trained Stormy is due to make his first appearance over the battens, in the Trial Hurdle Race to be decided at Ellerslie on Saturday next. Reports from Te Rapa credit the Quin Abbey gelding with showing promise in his schooling, tasks, while he is also the right stamp to v make a successful juniper. Stormy will be meeting several seasoned ,huf l dlfers in the -race referred to and possibly the public will not be over-anxious to support him until he has had a race over the obstacles.

Saturn, who ran second to Tanagru in the Glenaray Handicap, of one mile, at Jta Hawke's Bay meeting, is entered for Hobson Handicap, of , oiie mile and ai-quarter, to be run on the, second day' of the Auckland Spring'meeting. He is a gelding by Mysllkn from Asterina and is bred the right-] way tb win races. He only started"' ion two occasions' last season and 'his best effort was a second to Patuki in the Souira Hunters' Flat' Race, of nine furlongs, at the Hawke's Bay, Hunt meeting.

Catkin, has got through - jiiehfcy of work sinq& he arrived at Blletelie and registered -a couple of, sound - gallops over six furlongs during the bust weeki haa only recently been tried out in open company he accounted tor a good field in the Marangai Handicap on the first day of the Wanganui meeting. Catkin has not been overraeed in the past and now that he has struck form he may be capable of winmn£,a g ood handicap event before the present season k concluded.

Pompeius was not Ridden to the best advantage in the : : Hunt Club Steeplociiase.yat Saturday, otherwise he would have been much harder to, beat. He ran to the front as they ascended tlie hill the first time, and maintained his position till they cahie down the last time, but he had thjen had enough, and both Importer and Master Arch accounted for him. If he had been more patiently handled in the riiiddte stages, he would have been much closer up when the post was reached.

i Sleepy Sol looked in nice order when he went out to contest the JelliCoe Handicap at Ellerslie on, Saturday. He jumped away well and with Mint Leaf w as lying second as .they raced alopg the back. When Beau Cavalier dropped back about half a mile from, home, the pair Went on in front and tbey turned for the judge together. Thursby headed them half way down and Mint Leaf hid had enough, but. ,Sieep'y Sol continued on and just failed to hold off Golden Krist in the last stride for second money, the pair passing the post together. • |

Importer was .ridden a good race iq the Pakuranga Hunt Club Cup, and he won very easily at the "finish. Pompieus took charge as they ascended the hill the first time and opened up a big break as they went along the back the last time. He led up the hill the last, time from Importer, but made a faulty jump at the first fence. Even,, then he had a good advantage.'! 1 However, coming down the hill Importer had his measure and won easily at the finish. Importer is a clever juniper and it was pleasing to see his trainer, W. Ryan, score a win, for he has .bestowed a lot of attention on the son of The White Anight, and lias him in great condition.

Cashier is a good three-year-old, and le s ould be seen to more advantage before the season is much further advance . He has had, only .three races this season* winning in his first outinat Wanganui and dead-heating in his ° n the same e °urse/ His' Xl r t, Ce Waß, at ? 511<irslic on Saturday for fl, Warm favourite for the Auckland Handicap. Passing the. seven furlong. post he was lyin* fourth and then dropped back a bit round the bend into :*he came fast on the oulr side >4d soon settled the opposition" winning very comfortably at the finish!

Kaiti showed up at the start of the Dunedin Handicap, but dropped back quickly, and was finished in the ruck.

Pure Tea, the two-year-old sister to Royal is coming on nicely since resuming work after a spell. This filly is a, very nice mover in her work, although she may not be ready to race for some time yet.

Bombarder looks as though he will strike form shortly for in the Auckland Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday he was second till the straight was reached. This horse would be better suited by a firm track.

Bef.ore the Gratitham Stakes was run at Randwick yesterday the veterinary surgeon reported that Perception was bleeding badly from one of his nostrils, and the stewards ordered his removal from the race.

Vivo and are looated at headquarters in readiness for the approaching spring meeting. Benzora had a couple of races at the Avondalo meeting, but did not show up, and may do better on a firmer track.

The latest addition to A. Julian's team is the Catmint—Merry Times filly Cat-e-mes. She was a starter in the second division of the Maiden Plate at the Avondale meeting, but failed to show up.

Considering First Prince was having his second outing over hurdles when he finished third to Pekatahi and llamblin-' Kid at Ellerslie last Saturday, his showing Was decidedly promising for a novice. Ho was only beaten over the last fifty yards and is likely to do better with a little more experience.

The three jumping events at the Pakuranga meeting w6re all won by Ellerslie-trained horses, which clearly indicates that the schooling facilites at headquarters are hard to beat. In fact, Ellerslie is one of the best preparing grounds for jumpers to be found in the Dominion.

By winning the open six-furlong race at the Hawke's Bay meeting Lipsol demonstrated that he is returning to form again. The Kilbroney gelding won four races last season and is a Useful sort at his best, although he is getting oh in years and is not likely to improve.

R. Reed was on Leadlight, Second in the first division of the Kensington Handicap at Randwick On Saturday and also on Limerick. Yesterday he was third on Peacemaker in the Breeders' Plate, second on Oratrix in the Metropolitan Handicap, and second on Leadlight in the Grantham Stakes.

Clever has made a good recovery from the injury she received through being kicked on the inside of the hock at the Wanganui meeting. The Psychology filly was out exercising on the two-year-old track yesterday morning and worked very freely and appears to have done well since coming to Ellerslio.

P. Conway has been keeping Llewellyn to the mark Since the big LuculiUS gelding captured the Grey Lynn Hurdles at Avondale. Llewellyn is engaged in the Trial Hurdle Race to be run at Ellerslie next Saturday and should be an improved hofse as'the result of his racing "at the Avondale meeting.

Wtnnington showed a lot Of pace as a two ; year-old last season and she had her first race this season in the Auckland Handicap, one mile, on Saturday." She led till the straight was reached audi finished fourth. Winning'ton should be harder to beat in a hack sprint event. Yesterday she. was sold to a Tolago Bay sportsman.

Tresham is apparently quite right again judging by his victory in the Spring Handicap at Napier Park last Saturday. ' This horse is engaged at the Auckland meeting and also ,is in the New Zealand Cup, and if he is started either here or at Riccarton he can be expected to perform prominently. •

Freehold should not be long in getting on the Winning list. In the Dunedin Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday he was drawn out wide at the barrier, but was one Qf the first to hit the front. He and Billikins carried on the running to the straight where his condition gave out and he finished fifth. This was bis first race as a three-year-old and he should be much benefited by it.

Toxeuma won the Hawke's Bay Guineas easily on Saturday, and confirmed the good opinion formed of him when he won as* a two-year-old at the Wellington winter meeting and later annexed the County Hack Handicap at Napier Park. This is his third consecutive success, so that he will have to be reckoned with in more important events this season. Toxeuma is by Arrowsmith from Te Aupaki, a mare by Merry Moment from Tiniua by Birkenhead.

White Wings was unlucky in the Dunedin" Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday. She was about the centre of the field when the four-furlong post was reached and had not up a "great deal of ground when they turned for home. However, she put in a great run at the finish and got up in time to dead-heat with Billikins for second place, a head behind Flying Juliet. Another stride and she was in front. If she had been better positioned earlier in the race she would have won. White Wings lias a lot of pace, and she should win a good race before long.

Oratrix, who finished second in the Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick yesterday, is owned by Mr. R. J. Murphv, of Wellington, who also has Concentrate racing iri Sydney. Oratrix is a five-year-old mare by Kilbroney from Oratress, the ..winner of the New Zealand Cup in 1020: Last season she won the Pahiatua Cup, and the Grandstand and Liverpool Handicaps at the Manawatu summer meeting, while she was second in the Wbodville Cup and third in the Great Autuhin Handicap at Riccarton. She is in the New Zealand Cup with-7.1, or 101b less than she carried yesterday, and on her breeding Bhould stay all right. Oratrix was paying over half-a-century to win yesterday.

Another Breeders' Plate has been Won by a New Zealander, for Gold Tinge, who scored yesterday at Randwick, is owned by Mr. G. J. Barton, of Dunedin, who is better known in the trotting circles, for he owns Young Blake, Elzear, Concliff and others. Gold Tinge .was bred by Mr. I. G. Duncan at the Elderslie stud, and was sold at the last January sales for 250gns. to Mr. Barton. He is by Paper Money from Vicereine, by Birkenhead from Roie, by St. Leger or Captivator from Hippona, and this was his first start. Boniform woa this event in 1906, for the late Mr. G. G. Stead, while Mr. E. J. Watt captured it in 1911 with Ventura. Mr. G; I/. -Stead scored m 1917 with Almoner, and in 1924 Mr. \ GKenwood won with Nincompoop.
