CASE FOR THE PRISONS BOARD.

WELLINGTON, Tuesday

"The petition should be referred to the Government for consideration with a recommendation that the matter be referred to the Prisons Board at an early date," was the report of the M to Z Committee of the House of Representatives, on the petition of E. G. Skeates and 2120 others of Auckland, praying for cancellation of an order of imprisonment and granting probation m lieu thereof. The petition referred to the case of three young men, Edward W. K. Eymer (21), William .T. Robinson (2!) and Neville C. Holier (22), sentenced to ri formative detention, the two firstnamed to 18 months each, and Moller to three years. They were charged with breaking, entering and theft. Petitioners asserted that the trio were not criminals, but merely foolish. Mr. Alex. Harris and other Auckland members supported the committee's report, and urged that the cases be reviewed at an early date.

A Favourable Report. The Railways Committee, reporting on the petition of A. 11. S. Bartram, of Brandon Road, Glen Eden, seeking an inquiry and compensation in respect of an accident in the Newmarket railway workshops, recommended that the Government give the petition favourable consideration. R.S.A. Petition. "That the Minister of Defence be requested to recommend a rehearing of the case of Margaret Boyd by the War Pensions Board," was the report of the Defence Committee on the petition of the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association praying that a retrospective pension and allowances, or rehearing by the War Pensions Board, be granted Margaret Boyd, nursing sister of the N.Z.E.F. A Schoolboy's Future.

A petition by Mark W. Coates, of .Aukopae, Taumarunui, praying for an inquiry and relief in regard to alleged injuries received by his son whilst a tiupil at the Wanganui Technical School, was reported on bv the Education Committee in most favourable terms. The committee expressed its opinion that the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, and that the Government, in association with the Technical School Board, should pay a compassionate allowance to the pa rents and make suitable arrangements for the boy's education and future welfare. Land Tax Refund. The petition of the Kaihu Valley Lanjl Co.. Ltd., of Auckland, praying for refund of land tax, has been referred to the for favourable consideration on the recommendation of the Lands Committee. A Tauranga Request. Favourable consideration is recommended by the Railways Committee for the petition of J. C. Earl and ten others of the Tauranga County, praying for provision of a railway crossing "at Mount MaunganuK' The Tongariro Contract. Stating that they desire to take the necessary legal steps to terminate their present contract with the Tongariro Timber Co., Ltd., 43 Maori residents of the Rotorua electorate have petitioned the House on the lines of their petition of the last seven years. They ask that they be authorised to enforce their legal remedies for cancellation of the Tongariro contract. A Grandmother's Petition. "Owing to the early death of the children's widowed mother, the widow's pension could not be applied for, and was not to be applied for, and was not granted, so that the children have been inequitably deprived of the benefits of the Pensions Act," states Susanna Cosgrove, of 42, Clarence Street, Devon port, in a petition presented to-day by Mr. A. Harris. The petitioner, who is a widow, prays that an allowance be made her equnl to a widow's pension which would have devolved upon her had the orphaned children's late mother been in receipt of the widow's pension prior to her death. She states that, owinsr to the death of Mr. H. T. Buckler, a railwav emplovee. at Hnmilton. on .Tulv 29. 1026. and of his wife on the following day. the responsibility for the maintenance nnd educnt'on of her four rrandehildren. nil under 15 years of mre. devolved upon her. and fhnt their rnilwav superannuation is insufficient to maintain and educate them.
