NOTORIETY FOR AUCKLAND. PUBLICITY IN AUSTRALIA. "The most embarrassing feature of our holiday was to see the cabled reports which appeared in the Australian newspapers concerning "The sins of Auckland," said Mr. W. B. Leyland, on returning to-day with Mrs. Leyland from a winter sojourn in Northern Queensland. "People who knew that we came from Auckland seemed to think that in some way we might contaminate them," added Mr. Leyland in semi-humourous vein. "1 told them that I knew something of cities like Chicago, New York, Paris and Naples, also that in 1901 we spent a whole night in Chinatown, San Francisco. "On the strength of this experience we assured our friends that Auckland was certainly not as wicked as some cities we knew and that in any case the Salvation Army had carried out a similar demonstration in Wellington." Mr. Leyland said that it was to be regretted that such publicity concerning Auckland found its way into newspapers so far afield.
