SMOKING IN TRAMS.
The remarks appearing in your paper lately concerning the question of "Smoking in Trams* cause one to reflect on this question a bit and to wonder whether we are not drifting in a wrong direction. Examples mar prove helpful and one may point to the case of a family where there is only one child. Here as a rule, though not in all cases, he or she is spoilt by the fact of being allowed too much license, which tends to selfishness. In the case of a large family, well trained, each has to put up with bumps and bruises, a process which breeds a spirit of give and which makes for character and brings things into harmony. If in any home preference is shown jealousy arises and disorder follows. Directly you give preference either in the or the community you may look for trouble. Now the same argument applies to smoking in trams. lam a smoker, and I feel sure other smokers, if they are truly honest and WA upon themselves as real citizens, would spin the idea of having conceded to them something to the detriment of another section of ths community. That, however, is truly what we are receiving, and in order that no preference be given the City Council should not, in tba first place, have set aside one part for smokers, letting the rest take what is left. The smoker can go to a concert and refrain from smoking; the same applies to lectures and to the picture*. He can therefore do without smoking for the short time he rides on the trams. The trams should be open to all, irrespective of smoking. The present position is unfair to the publit as a whole. at.it
