FATAL ACCIDENT.
DOCTOR'S WIFE KILLED. STRUCK BY TRAMCAK. TRAGIC OCCURRENCE IN SYMONDS STREET. The death of Mrs. E. S. Dukea, wife of Dr. Dukes, of 3, Glenside Crescent, Symonds Street, occurred last evening as the result of injuries caused by being struck by a tramcar in Upper Syruonds Street. Heavy rain was falling at the time of the accident. Mrs. Dukes was on her way to a concert, and left the footpath at the top of Glenside Crescent to cross over Symonds Street. She had an umbrella in one hand. Reaching the tramlines, she was struck by a tram bound from the city to Onehunga, the driver being Mr. C. Halley. Mrs. Dukes was caught on the lifeguard and pinned under the platform. A jack was necessary before she could be extricated. This was secured from a box at the corner of Newton Road and Symonds Street, and Mrs. Dukes was rescued about ten minutes after being struck. She was immediately taken to the Auckland Hospital by ambulance, but died before admission. The injuries included a fracture of the skull. Mr. F. K. Hunt. S.M., coroner, opened the inquest this morning, and after having taken evidence of identification, adjourned it sine die.
