TE KUITI, this day.

When a mixed train running between Taumarunui and Frankton was close to Te Kumi, yesterday morning, the driver saw a loose sleeper lying across the rails. The brakes were applied quickly, but the engine hit the sleeper, luckily without damage.

Police inquiries led to the arrest of a Maori boy, who appeared before justices tliis morning. The evidence showed that tho boy was not under proper control, and the justices ordered that he be placed under the care of the Child Welfare superintendent.
