PEOPLE IN PERIL.

FACING STARVATION.

Hurricane Devastates Island Of Haiti. FATE OF 100,000 INHABITANTS. (Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) (Received 10 a.m.) PORT AU PRINCE, August 29. "More than 100,000 people are facing starvation since the recent hurricane devastated the area of Haiti. All animals have been killed, and the entire crops were destroyed. It will take from three to six months to grow new crops."

This is a passage in a statement issued by M. Louis Borno, President of Haiti, West Indies.

"The resources of the Government," he continues, "are insufficient to adequately help these unfortunate people. We must rebuild roads and bridges, and provide food and shelter."

On August 20 a message was received from Port au Prince, Haiti, stating that the worst storm experienced for 40 years had occurred. Damage was estimated at £200,000. It was stated that 200 were dead and that 10,000 were homeless, as a result of the storm. Many villages were wiped out, and incalculable damage was done to the crops.
