FRUIT FROM THE ISLANDS.

I wish to draw your attention to th© unequal treatment of Samoan and Nitiean shippers of bananas by the N.Z.G.s. Maui Pomare. Samoan shippers are guaranteed five shillings net per case. The Niuean shippers have to stand not only the dead loss of fruit but in addition have to pay freight, cost of cases, etc., when, as in the present case, the shipment arrives in bad condition owing to mishap on the ship. Is this fair? The Niueana are a long-suffering and patient people, but it is not very encouraging to them to see their turbulent Samoan brethren receiving advantageous terms which are denied to the lawabiding Niueans. Nine is a rocky island with poor and scanty soil and the natives have to work very hard to produce results, which are obtainable with little labour in the rich soil of Samoa. POLYNESIAN.
